Getting Started
User/Login information:
An email will be sent to the president and webmaster of the Student Organization which includes the user name, password and host name which allows access to the web space.
Website Creation:
The best way to start developing your Website is to spend a few hours learning the basics of HTML, the standard web page coding language. An excellent resource for beginning Web design is Web Monkey (click on the Beginners link).
Many programs exist to help you design Websites. Two of the best programs are Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Dreamweaver. Both programs offer help with Web page layout and HTML code generation. Both programs can be purchased at a student price at the Computer Store located on the second floor of the USF bookstore. You are free to use any Web development software you like.
Note: When developing your new site, make sure to name your homepage file "default.htm". This filename lets the server know which page is designated as the homepage.
Uploading your Website
Once you are done creating your Website, you'll need to transfer it to the Web server.
Web Design Programs
The Web design programs mentioned above, Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Dreamweaver, have built in file transfer capabilities. You will connect to your Web space using the login information we sent to you via email, and transfer your locally developed site to the Web server
FTP Programs
If you are not using a Web design program, you will use an FTP program to transfer your files to the Web server. Many of these programs are available for free (Example: Filezilla Client).
IMPORTANT Login Change: Secure FTP enabled
We have recently upgraded the Web server to be faster and more secure. You must connect to your Web space using Secure FTP (SFTP). This option can be found in the connection settings of either your Web design or FTP program.
